Scrapbooking 101 — Intro to Memory Keeping

This course will introduce you to time-saving products and techniques to make beautiful page layouts in which your photos are the star. Holiday Workshop

Nov. 26

Saturday | 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. | Fort Edward Art Center & Archive Building

Beat the holiday rush. Join us and learn how to create your own balsam wreath and balsam centerpiece for holiday décor or as a thoughtful gift. You will also learn how to make bows for decorations and other decorating techniques. Using balsam greens from the Adirondacks, you'll trim with a bow and decorate with pine cones. You will go home with two holiday pieces to enjoy throughout the season. Students are encouraged to bring gardening gloves, a pair of garden clippers for cutting the greens and a bag lunch.

Registration for this class closes Monday, Nov. 21. Please note the college will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday from Nov. 23 to 27.

DRIVER TRAINING

Five-Hour Pre-Licensing Course

This five-hour pre-licensing course is required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for all applicants who want to take a road test for a driver's license. A MV-278 completion certificate needed for road test appointments will be issued at the conclusion of this class.

Please note: A New York State Learner's Permit (photo ID) is required. Students should join the class 15 minutes early. Class starts promptly at the scheduled time. Students must have their cameras on at all times during the course; the instructor must be able to see each student to confirm attendance for the duration of the class. Beginner Cookie Decorating: Christmas Creations (currently full; waitlisted)

Thank you for your interest in learning the use of royal icing to decorate cookies. If you've never worked with royal icing or have dabbled, this class will help you get the ball rolling. We will work step by step on each cookie to learn various decorating techniques used with royal icing, specifically piping/outlining, flooding and wet-on-wet techniques. There are five cookie designs planned and we will keep things rolling to get them all completed by the end of class. You will take them home with you in a bakery box, along with a royal icing recipe, a sugar cookie recipe (not Buttercup Cookie's signature recipe, but a foundation of it), a decorating tool, a cookie cutter and a packet of seasonal sprinkles and/or cookie decorations. Enjoy a visit to Skene Manor, Whitehall's Castle on the Mountain, which is one of the few remaining castles in northeast New York. The castle was constructed of stone blocks cut right out of the mountain that frames the manor. This magnificent structure shows turn-of-the-century craftsmanship rarely duplicated today. Walking Tour of Hudson Falls

This two-hour session focuses on the haunted history of the Barkeater Chocolates factory and finishes off with a sweet, hands-on experience. Ideal Dairy Farms & Argyle Cheese Farmer Dairy Processing & Store Tour

Visit a commercial dairy farm milking 3,000 cows and learn what goes into producing delicious and nutritious dairy products. Ideal Dairy Farms staff will share how they care for their cows and discuss innovative technology and tools that allow the farm to remain competitive and sustainable in the dairy industry. Following the Ideal Dairy Farms tour, participants will travel a short distance to the Argyle Cheese Farmer dairy processing plant and retail store to discover how Ideal Dairy's milk is made into cheese, yogurt and lots of other delicious products. Participants will also have the option to shop a collection of farm-fresh, delicious, homemade products.

Please note: This two-hour program includes an indoor and outdoor walking tour of an operating dairy farm, so please dress appropriately. An Architectural & Musical Treasure Tour in Glens Falls

Friday | 1 to 3 p.m. | First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls

The First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls is one of the most significant architectural buildings in the North Country and listed in National Register of Historic Places. Designed by famed American architect Ralph Adams Cram, the 1929 neo-Gothic building displays beautiful stonework, magnificent wood carvings and colorful stained-glass windows. The church is home to two large pipe organs, which you will experience in sight and sound. With more than 7,000 pipes ranging from the size of a pencil to 32 feet long, this world-renowned instrument is one of the 100 largest pipe organs in the world. Bryan Kirk, music director and organist, will take you on an informative tour of the building. You'll also have a chance to hear this magnificent instrument, from the softest ethereals to roof-raising and floor-shaking fortissimos. See rarely observed, behind-the-scenes views of the organ chambers, pipes and air reservoirs, and learn about the extensive music program and concerts the church offers for the benefit of our community.

Park Theater Tour & Lunch

Nov. 4

Friday | 10:30 a.m. to noon | The Park Theater, Glens Falls

Get an inside look into this historic theater, now a hotspot for community events and performances. Opened Dec. 23, 1911, Park Theater was the first movie theater in Glens Falls and became a gathering place for residents to watch silent films and vaudeville shows. After closing in 1935, the Glens Falls Post Co., publishers of The Post-Star, purchased the theater in 1937 and converted it into a printing plant. Over the years, it has been gradually improved for use as a performing arts center, rented out for occasional concerts and used to operate a movie theater. In July 2014, local developer Elizabeth Miller, president of Miller Mechanical, purchased the property. With the help of AJA Architecture and Planning, and Cifone Construction Co., The Park Theater was transformed into a state-of-the-art performing space with Doc's Restaurant downstairs. Your tour will conclude with lunch (a sandwich/wrap with beverage, chips and dessert) at Doc's Restaurant.

Topics in Music Theory II

This course will build upon concepts presented in Topics in Music Theory I and will begin with a review of the keyboard, notation on the staff and major and minor key signatures and scales. We will then cover chords, including building triads (major, minor, diminished and augmented), seventh chords and chord inversions. The study of music theory provides a foundation for understanding concepts upon which music is built.

Electrical Maintenance Technician Bootcamp

In this short-term course, students will learn entry-level skills to begin their careers as electrical technicians in a variety of modern manufacturing environments. Ideal candidates include those new to work in a modern manufacturing environment with an aptitude for hands-on work and a desire to build competencies and skills to advance in their fields.

Through hands-on classes, independent study and work outside class, students will have the opportunity to build key competencies to ensure on-the-job success including:

  • A strong foundation in basic math applications and mathematical conversions between measurement units and mathematical systems

  • Reading and making precise measurements, and using scientific notation

  • An introduction to AC and DC currents and their use in electrical systems

  • Safety around high-voltage equipment, including PPE, and the OSHA Lockout Tagout (LOTO) certification in electrical safety

  • An introduction to PLC equipment and relay communications

  • Hand tool use

  • Use of continuous improvement models in modern manufacturing, including Lean and Six Sigma

Companies wishing to upskill new or potential employees and individuals who want to enter the exciting and ever-changing world of modern manufacturing will benefit from this course. Sterile Processing Technician

This program is offered in partnership with Condensed Curriculum International (CCI). Sterile processing technicians perform and participate in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. These technicians play a critical role in preventing infection by sterilizing, cleaning, processing, assembling, storing and distributing medical supplies. The central service department of a health care facility is the hub of all activity surrounding supplies and equipment needed for surgery and patient care.

This course covers the following key areas and topics:

  • Instrumentation: knowledge of surgical instruments and specialty devices
  • Processing of surgical instrumentation: decontamination, packaging and sterilization of surgical instrumentation
  • Processing of moveable patient equipment: processing, cleaning, testing, assembly and distribution of movable patient care equipment
  • Storage and inventory: storage, handling and distribution of sterile surgical instrumentation and devices, as well as inventory control and cost recovery systems
  • Medical terminology: knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and microbiology
  • Prevention processes: infection prevention, decontamination and disinfection processes
  • National certification: This class prepares qualified students to sit for the Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) exam from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Python for Data Analytics

This course is designed for students with no programming experience and those interested in learning new coding languages or applications. Students will learn fundamental programming concepts using the programming language Python, specifically as a tool for collecting, analyzing and visualizing data. Python is one of the world's most popular programming languages, and more businesses are introducing Python into their work. The course will take students through the basics of programming (variables, data structures, loops, conditionals, etc.), and into Python Libraries for data analysis (Numpy, Matplotlib, etc). Basic statistics will also be covered to help students interpret data, such as basic summary statistics and how to recognize common statistical distributions. All this will culminate in the analysis and visualization of real data sets of the student's choosing. This course meets two evenings per week, three hours per session. Occasional labs outside classes will provide further opportunities for mentoring and networking.

If you are a notary public in New York state, you may be able to earn additional income! The thriving real estate and refinancing markets have companies scrambling to hire qualified Notary Signing Agents to help meet their increased business demands. After completing this basic introductory course, you'll be able to work on a freelance basis in your own independent business by working with mortgage, title and signing companies that hire Notary Signing Agents on per-job assignments, sometimes for $75 to $150 or more, for notarizing and presenting mortgage loan documents.
